IV iv. Watch your Characters

1. How and why does Swami ask women to 'Watch their Character'?

Watch your character: A women without a good character is as bad as dead; so women must be ever vigilant when they move about in the world. They should avoid flippant talk or free mixing.
Sathya Sai Baba
If one lacks character, one becomes weak in all other respects.
Sathya Sai Baba, 19 Nov 2002
A woman without modesty injures the interests of womanhood itself, besides undermining her own personality. She is like a fragranceless flower, which the world does not cherish or honour, or even approve of. The absence of modesty makes life, for a woman, however rich in other accomplishments, a waste and a vacuum.
Sathya Sai Baba
The wanton behaviour of women has enveloped the world of today in an atmosphere of declining dharma. Women are harming themselves by running after fleeting pleasure, disregarding the need to develop good character and elevating qualities. They are enamoured of pseudo freedom, which feeds their conceit.
Sathya Sai Baba
Modesty is essential for women; it is her priceless jewel. It is against Dharma for a woman to overstep the limits of modesty; crossing the limits brings about many calamities. Why, the very glory of womanhood will be destroyed. Without modesty, woman is devoid of beauty and culture.
Sathya Sai Baba
Maintain two-fold purity: Everyone has to observe purity in body, dress and manners. This is external purity. This is not enough. The mind also has to be kept pure. The thoughts should be clean. It is necessary to maintain both external and internal cleanliness. It is easy to maintain external cleanliness by washing and removing the dirt. How is internal purity to be achieved? There is only one way. That is to recognise that, in all beings, from the smallest insect to the highest, there is God. This awareness will make the mind pure.
Sathya Sai Baba, 20 Jun 1989
Women have to be ever vigilant that they do not attract the eyes and tongues of young men by their dress, movements, laughter or behaviour. Be a little behind the times. It does not matter. It is better than adopting fashions that outrage the traditions and conventions of this country and its culture.
